Babylon, Babel & the Assembly of Gods
Every eye sees its own special vision;
every ear hears a most different song.
In each man’s troubled heart, an incision
would reveal a unique, shameful wrong.
Stranger fiends hide here in human guise
than reside in the valleys of Hell.~The Book of Counted Sorrows
God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.
2 How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.
3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.
4 Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.
5 They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
8 Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.
~Psalm 82
For generations, well meaning teachers of scripture have presented the story of the Tower of Babel as an object lesson on the dangers of pride. This horribly simplified account presents them as a foolish, arrogant people who thought they could build a tower high enough to reach Heaven.
The Hebrew prophets enjoyed playing with language, we often find word in the scriptures that sounds like the original but make a statement – for example, Beelzebub (“lord of the flies”) instead of Beelzebul (“Baal the Prince”) or Ish-bosheth (“man of a shameful thing”) in place of Ishbaal (“man of Baal”). The original Akkadian words Bab Ilu, which mean “gate of god” or “gate of the gods,” is replaced in the Bible with Babel, based on the Hebrew word meaning “confusion.”
Also, Babel was not actually IN Babylon – in fact, Babylon didn’t exist when the Ziggurat, or Tower of Babel – was built! It didn’t become a city until about a thousand years after the Tower of Babel incident, and even then, it remained an unimportant village for about another five hundred years.
Who commissioned the construction of the Tower of Babel? Traditions and sources outside the Scriptures identity the builder as Nimrod, who lived between 3500BC and 3100BC, a period of history called the Uruk Expansion. This tracks with what little the Scriptures tells us about Nimrod. In Genesis 10:10, we see “the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.”
For clarity, Shinar is Sumer and Erech is Uruk. And in fact, Uruk is still called Iraq today, barely changing 5000 years later. Babylon itself was northwest of Uruk, approximately 300 miles from the Persian Gulf in what is today central Iraq. But it wasn’t founded until around 2300 BC, at least 700 years after Nimrod.
So where was the infamous Tower of Babel? The oldest and largest ziggurat in Mesopotamia was at Eridu, the first city of the Sumerians. Many scholars believe the name Babylon was interchangable with other city names, including Eridu. So when we read about Babylon, it may not mean the Babylon.
Eridu, the city of Enki, became less dominant of the political situation in Sumer after its first two kings, Alulim and Alalgar, Unlike Ur, Uruk, Nippur, and other prominent worship centers. But Eridu was so important to Mesopotamian culture that more than 3000 years later, Hammurabi, the greatest king of the Old Babylonian Empire, was crowned not in Babylon, but in Eridu — even though Eridu had ceased to be an actual city about 1,300 years previous!
Even as far late as the time of Nebuchadnezzar, 1,100 years after Hammurabi, the kings of Babylon still sometimes referred to themselves as LUGAL.NUN – King of Eridu.
Why was Eridu so important? It was the first city, the place where “kingship descended from heaven,” a city possibly buil by Cain or his son, and it may even have been named for Cain’s grandson, Irad.
Archeologists have uncovered eighteen levels of the temple to Enki at Eridu. The oldest levels of the E-abzu, a small structure less than ten feet square, date to the founding of the city around 5400 BC.
This means the first small shrine to Enki may well have been built by Cain or his immediate descendants. This place remained sacred to Enki long after the city was deserted, around 3100 BC. The temple itself remained in use until the fifth century BC, nearly 5000 years after the first crude altar was built to accept offerings to the god of The Abyss, The Abzu. Abzu (ab = water + zu = deep) is very likely where we get the English word “Abyss.”
Another clue is the name of Enki itself, a compound word. En is Sumerian for “lord” and ki is the word for “earth.” Thus, Enki, god of the abzu, was “Lord of the Earth.” This is very telling, as Yeshuah (Jesus’s real name) referred to Satan (the adversary) as “the ruler of this world.” Paul also referred to ‘the god of this world.”
Another piece to this puzzle: Nimrod was of the 2nd generation after the flood. His father was Cush, son of Ham, son of Noah. In Sumerian history, the second king of Uruk after the Flood was named Enmerkar, son of Mesh-ki-ang-gasher.
Those same clever Hebrew writers of the Old Testament, doing what they often did with language, transformed the name “Enmer” – the consonants N-M-R (Remember, there are no vowels in ancient Hebrew) – into Nimrod, which makes it sound like marad, the Hebrew word for “rebel.”
An epic poem from about 2,000 BC called “Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta” preserves the basic details of the Tower of Babel story.
While we don’t know exactly where Aratta was, likely in the range from Northern Iran to Armenia. Not only is Armenia located near the center of an ancient kingdom called Urartu, which may be a cognate for Aratta, where Noah landed his Ark, the mountains of Ararat.
It’s likely that Enmerkar/Nimrod was trying to intimidate the people – his cousins – who settled near where his grand-grandfather landed the ark. Wherever Aratta was, Nimrod threatened this neighboring peoples to compel them to send building materials for his temples and buildings.
Besides building a fabulous temple for the goddess of whores, Inanna, in order to impress and seduce her, he also wanted to build a seat of the “gods” above the Abzu-the Abyss.
“Let the people of Aratta bring down for me the mountain stones from their mountain, build the great shrine for me, erect the great abode for me, make the great abode, the abode of the gods, famous for me, make my me prosper in Kulaba, make the abzu grow for me like a holy mountain, make Eridug [Eridu] gleam for me like the mountain range, cause the abzu shrine to shine forth for me like the silver in the lode. When in the abzu I utter praise, when I bring the me from Eridug, when, in lordship, I am adorned with the crown like a purified shrine, when I place on my head the holy crowd in Unug Kulaba, then may the … of the great shrine bring me into the jipar, and may the … of the jipar bring me into the great shrine. May the people marvel admiringly, and may Utu (the sun god) witness it in joy.”
The Tower of Babel was an expansion to the abzu, the ancient, pre-flood temple of Enki, the god Sumerians credited with the gifts of civilization (the mes) and for creating the apkallu (The Watchers, and later their Nephilim descendants.) The very same entities, and teachings, that eventually inspired God’s wrath and the Great Flood. Nimrod wanted to build an abode of the gods, an artificial mount of assembly, right on top of the abzu.
Since the fallen angels first rebelled, landing on Mt Hermon in the Days of Jared, long before the Days of Noah or the terrible Deluge – they have attempted to create a one world government, and a one world religion, centered around them – in contrast to the creator. This was the purpose of Nimrod the Conquerer, and this is the “Magnum Opus” or “Great Work of The Ages” for the modern secret societies. The Capstone of the pyramid on the dollar bill finally coming to rest upon its base, united in devotion to open worship of the Eye within it.
Or, in other words, The Satan (Fallen angels) Sitting in the place of the creator, YHWH.
Is this why God destroyed this particular pagan temple, while leaving intact so many magnificent pagan temples all over the ancient world?
Calling Babel a story about the sin of pride is easy, but it drains the story of its spiritual and supernatural context. Without getting lost in the details, we can draw a few broad conclusions from the tale: The king of Uruk, Nimrod, wanted to rebuild and expand the ancient, pre-Flood temple of Enki, the god Sumerians thanked for the gifts of civilization (the mes) and for creating the apkallu (the Watchers) – even though their interventions in human affairs, even according to Babylonian myths, was responsible for the Great Flood.
The elements of the Babel story are all there in “Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta”: the pride that drove Nimrod to dominate the known world with the first One World Government, construction of a Ziggurat that Yahweh destroyed, and the supernatural confusion of languages that gave the Tower its Hebrew name, Babel. Although the Babylonian myths credit Enki with the confusion of tongues, it serves as yet another historical example of the accuracy of the Scriptures as history books.
“Scholar and renowned linguist Charles Berlitz of Berlitz language schools spoke an amazing 32 languages and just like Sir William Jones, his life’s research in comparative linguistics led him to the inescapable conclusion that all the world’s languages must trace back to a single, lost, ancient dialect. Berlitz actually wrote several books about Atlantis and believed the primary language of the human race originated there.”
“In 1786 Sir William Jones, a Supreme Court judge who could speak 30 languages, gave his Third Anniversary Discourse to the Asiatic Society where he declared that the similarities between Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, German, Celtic and Persian languages could only be explained on the hypothesis that they all shared a common parentage. His contemporary, the German philosopher Hegel, compared the consequences of Jones’ revelation to the discovery of a whole new world and his ground-breaking work on this subject established him as the founder of comparative linguistics. Jones wrote that, “The Sanscrit language, whatever be its antiquity, is of a wonderful structure; more perfect than the Greek, more copious than the Latin, and more exquisitely refined than either, yet bearing to both of them a stronger affinity, both in the roots of verbs and the forms of grammar, than could possibly have been produced by accident; so strong indeed, that no philologer could examine them all three, without believing them to have sprung from some common source, which, perhaps, no longer exists; there is a similar reason, though not quite so forcible, for supposing that both the Gothic and the Celtic, though blended with a very different idiom, had the same origin with the Sanscrit; and the old Persian might be added to the same family.”
So as we’ve covered here, Babel was not in Babylon; it was in Eridu. The Tower was the temple of the God Enki (Satan) and its purpose was to create a counterfeit abode of the gods and mount of assembly – ever does Satan seek to sit in Gods throne.
We mentioned earlier that archeologists at Eridu have found eighteen construction layers at the site of Enki’s temple. Some of those layers were below an eight-foot deposit of silt from a massive flood. The most impressive layer of construction, called Temple 1, was huge, a temple on a massive platform with evidence of an even larger foundation that would have risen up to almost the height of the structure itself. Yet, here we find that Temple 1 was never finished. At the peak of the builder’s architectural achievement, Eridu was suddenly and completely abandoned. The Uruk Period appears to have been brought to a decisive end by no less an event than the total abandonment of the site in what appears to have been an almost incredibly short time, drifting sand had filled the deserted buildings of the temple-complex and obliterated all traces of the community responsible for constructing it. (Confirmed by 1946 excavation at Eridu)
What could possibly cause people who’d committed to building the largest ziggurat ever at the most ancient and important religious site in the known world to the top god of their fallen angel and Nephilim pantheon to quit? Why abandon Eridu and leave the E-abzu unfinished? Perhaps it was Genesis 11:8-9:
“Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So YHWH dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. (Emphasis added)
God’s response was poetic and masterful, naturally, and he simply splintered the tongues (languages) of mankind into 70 different nations, “according to the number of the sons of God” or, under the control of various fallen angels which would then seek to go to war with one another over whose gods were stronger and various misunderstandings that arose from being unable to communicate. A house divided amongst itself cannot stand, and so God split the house of evil against itself. Much the same way he did with the Titans, turning them to war against one another.
It was here that the Language of Symbols was born, according to Freemason author AE. Waite. And the elite occult began to reconnect through universal symbols that did not require the spoken tongue.
“Out of evil comes good, however, and the confusion of tongues gave rise to ‘the ancient practice of Masons conversing without the use of speech.’
~A.E. Waite.
“When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. But the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage.”
– Deuteronomy 32:8-9 (ESV)
While many bibles translate this as the sons of Israel instead of the sons of God, we chose the ESV translation for this passage because they follow most of the existing copies of the Septuagint and the texts of Deuteronomy found among the more ancient Dead Sea Scrolls. Logic, also affirms this interpretation, Israel (Jacob) wasn’t around when God divided mankind after Babel. He wouldn’t be born for another 1,200 to 1,500 years.
This is important, getting this verse right makes a lot of things in the Scriptures easier to understand. Making the case linguistically requires us to go back to a few earlier passages from Deuteronomy.
“And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.” – Deuteronomy 4:19 (ESV)
all the nations will say, ‘Why has the LORD done thus to this land? What caused the heat of this great anger?’ Then people will say, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt, and went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they had not known and whom he had not allotted to them. – Deuteronomy 29:24-26 (ESV)
The word rendered “inheritance” and “heritage” in Deuteronomy 32:8-9 is the Hebrew nahkal, and the word translated “portion” is the Hebrew kheleq. In the Deuteronomy 4 and 29 passages, “allotted” is based on the Hebrew khalaq, the same root used to describe Israel’s status in chapter 32. Israel is the allotted heritage of Yahweh, and the other gods were allotted to “all the peoples under the whole heaven.”
So after Babel, the nations and peoples of the world were divided, geographically and spiritually, according to the number of the sons of God.
This concept of territorial spirits finds precedent in Scripture, the most obvious example is when the angelic messenger to Daniel wrestles for 21 days with the Prince of Persia, a supernatural spirit entity, in order to deliver a message to Daniel. It’s fair speculation that this Prince of Persia is indeed one of the 200 Bene Ha Elohim (Sons of God) that landed on Mt Hermon, and yet since many of them were to be bound in chains beneath the earth for their transgressions with the daughters of mankind and the creation of the race of Nephilim monsters. We can assume most of these fallen angels were unable to rule over nations as spirits.
This leaves a few possibilities that make sense.
Possibility One: Azazel (or some other fallen Bene Ha Elohim (Son of God) angels) were allowed to roam free – while his brethren were in chains beneath the earth for making demon Nephilim.
Yet, We know from Scriptures that Satan is allowed to roam free!
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:”
– Deuteronomy 29:26 (KJV)
We can assume that God’s punishments for violating his law was meted out equally among the fallen angels. So why were some allowed to go free? Because not ALL of the fallen procreated abominations with women?
Azazel, as one prime example, has no record I can find of descendants, unlike many of the other fallen angels, including the leader Shemiyaza. Instead, he focused his efforts on corrupting mankind and teaching them murder, war, vanity, pride, makeup, etc. He seems the be the closest figure of “The Devil” that I can find connections for. While his peers were making babies and teaching women secrets, he was busy corrupting mankind as his full time focus. Perhaps Azazel, then, was the Prince of Persia. Who else could wrestle with an angel for 21 days and delay him until even the archangel Michael had to help? Wasn’t it Michael who threw the Dragon out of heaven in the first place? We know Michael can take the Devil down.
Possibility One: though I consider it far less likely, is that one of the fallen Nephilim (Demonic Spirits in Death) spirits was the Prince of Persia. I do not think that a Giant or Nephilim spirit, even a first generation Titan, would have the power to withstand an angelic messenger of Yahweh for 21 days. Admittedly, there may be power differentials we do not understand. Perhaps the hybrid angel human child of a powerful archangel is stronger than a lesser, pure angel. In which case, a spirit of the titans could possibly withstand lesser angels.
As for the table of nations and the 70 sons of El? Again, there are multiple possible solutions.
Possibility Two: They could very well, especially by a post flood timeline, be the Nephilim offspring of one of the fallen angels, this seems to best fit the information we have. And also explains whom God allotted to the 70 nations from the Table of Nations found in Genesis 10.
The Chief God of the Canaanite divine council was El, who had 70 sons. These ‘gods’ were likely the Nephilim, although far from first generation (the Titans) they were still giants and quite powerful – likely reaching 20 or 30 feet heights during this time period. While each new generation of these Nephilim became weaker and smaller, they ruled over humanity for most of our history as gods. It’s also worth noting that El means “of God”, and virtually all the fallen angels carried this in their name. Like Azazel.
While we cannot be sure which of the fallen El represents to the Canaanite Nephilim, what we can know is that these fallen angel offspring, the Nephilim Demigods, were flesh and blood and ruled over mankind with cruelty and avarice. While many Fallen Angels had children, and that seed continues even today, we can safely assume that these “sons of El” were Nephilim children of the Fallen Angel El’s, or “of God” as they originally were.
So we see that as God split the nations, he “fixed the borders of peoples according to the number of the sons of God” (In this case, 70 Nephilim) and allowed the false gods to rule over the other peoples, while claiming Jacob (Israel) as his own “allotted heritage.”
Possibility Three: As I mentioned before, Azazel or some other fallen angel may have skipped the particular sin of procreation with women and the abomination of Nephilim offspring, allowing himself to “roam free” while his fallen peers remain trapped until just before the day of judgement. But a less likely possibility is that there were as many as 70 of these fallen angels that skipped the imprisonment punishment and were still free by the post flood world.
Further complicated by the confounding of language, the post Babel world had many Nephilim, each of which were known by as many as 70 names by the various people groups. So 70 versions of the same character, and 70 different characters at least. Dagon for the Philistines, Chemosh for Moab, Molech for Ammon, Marduk for Babylon, Hadad (Baal) for the Canaanites, and so on.
Before Babel, every city in Sumer had a temple that was home to the city’s patron god. After Babel, each nation had its own patron god and ‘fixed borders’.
And this is just from the Sons of El (whoever that was..) as there were THOUSANDS of Nephilim over time, all the way down to King Og of Bashan and even little Goliath.
While God may have appointed nations for each of his “children” he also admonished them for their sinful ways. And ultimately, sentenced them to death for it.
A Psalm of Asaph.
God presides in the divine assembly; He renders judgment among the gods:
“How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked?
Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; uphold the rights of the afflicted and oppressed.
Rescue the weak and needy; save them from the hand of the wicked.
They do not know or understand; they wander in the darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
I have said, ‘You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High.
But like mortals you will die, and like rulers you will fall.”
Arise, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are Your inheritance.”
~Psalm 82
Shortnotes:
Archeologists uncovered eighteen levels of the Temple to Enki, God of the abzu or “Abyss” at Eridu, site of the largest and oldest ziggurat in Mesopotamia, and first city of the Sumerians. And actual location of the destroyed Tower of Babel (Babylon the City didn’t exist for another 1000 years.)
Eridu, First City, was the place where “Kingship descended from heaven.” According to the Sumerians. A city possibly built by Cain or his son, and named after Irad, Cain’s Grandson. Is where Nimrod chose to build the Bab Ilu, or “Gate of the Gods” in Akkadian. The Hebrew Prophets changed this to Babel, meaning “confusion.”
The oldest levels of the E-abzu (“House of the Abyss”), a small structure less than ten feet square, date to the founding of the city around 5400 BC. Sacrificial fish bones were scattered round the building, this first crude shrine to Enki may have been built by Cain himself. This remained a sacred site for 3100 BC, long after the city was deserted.
The word Enki itself is a compound word. En is “Lord” and Ki is “Earth” in Sumerian. Thus, Enki is “God of the Abzu (Abyss) and Lord of The Earth”
“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”
~2 Corinthians 4:4
Nimrod himself stated his purpose for the Tower of Babel in the epic poem from around 2,000 BC called “Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta” was to build the “abode of the gods” (A false mount of assembly) right on top of the Abyss of Satan.
“Let the people of Aratta bring down for me the mountain stones from their mountain, build the great shrine for me, erect the great abode for me, make the great abode, the abode of the gods, famous for me, make my name propser in Kulaba, make the abzu glow for me like a holy mountain, make Eridug gleam for me like the mountain range, cause the abzu shrine to shine forth for me like the silver in the lode. When in the abzu I utter praise, when I bring the me from Eridug, when in lordship, I am adorned with the crown like a putrified shrine, when I place on my head the holy crown of Unug Kulaba, then may the .. of the great shrine bring me into the jipar, and may the … of the jipar bring me into the great shrine. May the people marvel admiringly, and may Utu (the sun god) witness it in joy.
The Lord of Aratta, of course, is Noah. Who landed on Mt Ararat.

Ancient architecture reveals that many cultures were extremely advanced in their tracking of celestial bodies. Near the beginning of the post-Flood epoch, one culture sought to build a high tower but was frustrated by God through the confusion of spoken language. Although there are several Mesopotamian cities called ‘Babel,’ only Eridu shows evidence of an enormous tower that was left unfinished and a mass dispersion of people in all directions — all just before the emergence of the written form of different languages in Southern Mesopotamia.
